There is simply no excuse for people to die in fires because they don't have working smoke detectors in their home. Smoke detectors cost around $10 with batteries only $1 at Dollar Tree. Stories like this should never happen.
tldr; make sure the smoke detectors in your home have fresh batteries each spring and fall and test them monthly.
