10 Bystander Medical Skills

If you are old enough, you will remember that when someone keeled over having a heart attack years ago, people would just kind of look at them then call for an ambulance.  It wasn't until the 1970s that the idea of training civilians to do CPR could save the life of someone having a heart attack became a thing.  Fast forward to now and CPR classes are quite common in schools and at other community events because when seconds count, EMS is usually (several) minutes away.  Here are 10 skills everyone should know how to do in order to save a life before EMTs and paramedics arrive:

  1. CPR
  2. AED use
  3. Heimlich Maneuver
  4. Basic First Aid
  5. Stop the Bleed
  6. How to use lifesaving drugs (Epi Pen, Narcan, asthma inhaler, Glucose Tabs, etc)
  7. Treating shock
  8. Initial hypothermia treatment
  9. Recognizing a stroke
  10. Suicide warning signs
